CPSIA NEEDS SOME CHANGES, NORD TELLS ICPHSO CROWD
Congress should amend the CPSIA, Acting CPSC Chairman Nancy Nord said February 26. She told an audience at the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization (ICPHSO) annual meeting in Orlando that the law is well intentioned but contains some serious flaws.

CERTIFY DESPITE STAY, MULLAN URGES
CPSC’s one-year enforcement stay of certification provisions under the CPSIA does not mean companies should forgo certifying products until February 2010, CPSC Compliance Director Gib Mullan told an ICPHSO audience February 26.

CPSC 2009 APPROPRIATIONS LIKELY TO BE $105.4 MILLION
CPSC would get $105.4 million under an appropriations bill passed February 25 by the House. H.R. 1105 specifies that $6 million would go to the agency’s ongoing lab improvements and that $2 million would go to implementing the state grants under the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.

CPSC ASKS FOR FEEDBACK ON TRACKING LABELS
CPSC seeks comment by April 27 on a notice of inquiry about tracking labels for children’s products under the CPSIA.

FINAL RULE ON EXCLUSION PROCESS IS NEAR
CPSC members were set to vote by March 3 on publishing a final rule on the exclusion process for lead limits under the CPSIA.

EU PANEL FINDS NANOTECH DEFINITION LACKING
The definition of nanomaterials may need to be tweaked to include larger agglomerates and aggregates, according to an opinion from the EU’s Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks.

EU HEARS OF FALSE CE MARKS
France told the EU’s committee on the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) that it has found CE marks that mean “China Export.”

NFPA LOOKS AT HOME STRUCTURE FIRES
There were about 399,000 home structure fires in 2007, according to data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) made available February 18.

NAVY LAB HAS SOME SUCCESS WITH FIRE-EXIT PROJECT
A research project done by the Naval Research Laboratory for CPSC on systems to aid exit from burning buildings had limited initial success.

Oregon is likely to become the third state to ban novelty lighters following the state senate’s final passage of a bill February 23.

Intertek February 13 sent CPSC a proposed protocol for testing paint in toys under the CPSIA lead limits.
