TENENBAUM AND ADLER REACT POSITIVELY TO RILA EFFORT
CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum and Commissioner Robert Adler October 1 reacted positively to a possibly multi-trillion dollar effort by retailers to create a common set of safety specifications for suppliers, especially in China.

ADLER HEARS CALL FOR CARE WITH FR CHEMICALS
A consumer activist involved in CPSC's 1970s ban of Tris flame retardants is asking the agency to take care with rules related to flame retardant (FR) chemicals.

CPSC PENALTIES HIT RECORD IN FISCAL 2009
CPSC netted a record $9.839 million in civil penalties in fiscal 2009, which ended September 30. CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson told PSL that 39 companies paid fines, with many of the cases involving drawstrings on children's clothing and lead paint in toys, both focuses of the agency during the year.

CPSC IS WIPE-TESTING PRE-1985 BOOKS FOR LEAD
Chairman Inez Tenenbaum September 30 told representatives of the National School Supply Equipment Association that it is doing wipe tests on pre-1985 children's books for lead to get a basis for any decisions about them.
