TENENBAUM LIKELY TO FACE EARLY CONGRESSIONAL SCRUTINY
Inez Tenenbaum – President Barack Obama’s choice for CPSC chairman – likely would face Congress over the CPSIA just a few months into her tenure. Senators at her confirmation hearing (see story this issue) indicated that such scrutiny would be coming.

MOORE LAUDS MOVE TOWARDS RECALL CARDS
CPSC Acting Chairman Thomas Moore June 12 – in response to the commission’s 2-0 vote to move forward with a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPR) for recall-registration cards for durable infant and toddler products under CPSIA section 104 – praised the action as a chance to regain a lost opportunity.

TENENBAUM CONFIRMATION AIMED AT FAST TRACK
The Senate Commerce Committee June 18 unanimously voted Inez Tenenbaum’s nomination to be CPSC Chairman to the full Senate, where a floor vote could come within a week.

NORD PRAISES TOY INDUSTRY EFFORT
CPSC Commissioner Nancy Nord June 15 praised the TIA/ANSI Toy Safety Certification Program (TSCP) as an example of corporate responsibility. She was speaking in Paris at a conference on such responsibility by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

EU MOVES TOWARDS STANDARDS FOR WINDOW AND BATH ITEMS
Addressing the false sense of security often attributed to window guard and bathing aid items was behind a June 15 vote by EU member states in favor of safety rules for such devices.

EU CONSUMER GROUPS URGED STEPS FOR NANOTECH SAFETY
Noting the increased use of nanotechnology in electrical appliances, textiles, cosmetics, foods and medicines, the EU consumer groups ANEC and BEUC are calling for steps to ensure safety.

ANSI BEGINS ACCREDITING FOR TSCP
ANSI June 15 said it has opened its accrediting process for certification bodies that want to do assessments under the Toy Industry Association’s Toy Safety Certification Program (TSCP).

INDIANA JOINS STATES WITH FIRE-SAFE CIGARETTE LAWS

Indiana July 1 will become the 24th state with a law that that requires cigarette manufacturers and distributors to sell fire-safe cigarettes, otherwise know as reduced ignition propensity (RIP) cigarettes.
