DINGELL ASKS COMMISSIONERS FOR ‘CANDID’ FEEDBACK ON CPSIA
Rep John Dingell (D-Mich.) March 4 wrote CPSC members that he is “troubled that the [CPSIA] includes unrealistic deadlines for rulemakings and compliance, as well as too little implementation discretion for [CPSC], both of which are exacerbated by CPSC’s lack of adequate resources.”

CPSC HEARS OF FOREIGN TRADE ZONE USE FOR CPSIA
Foreign Trade Zones (FTZs) potentially could play a role in CPSIA enforcement, CPSC staff heard March 3.

EXCLUSION RULE PASSES; MOORE WANTS STRICT REVIEWS
CPSC members voted 2-0 March 4 to approve a final rule on CPSC procedures for making exclusion determinations for lead limits in children’s products.

NHTSA TO REVIEW CHILD SEAT STANDARDS
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) March 2 said it is launching a “top to bottom review of current child safety seat standards.”

EU OPENS DIALOG WITH RETAILERS ON SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS
The Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General, Environment Directorate General and other EU agencies March 3 launched the Retail Forum to increase “more environmentally sustainable consumption patterns,” an area that often overlaps product safety.

INTERTEK GOES AFTER TOY TESTING
Intertek is pushing hard to secure the toy testing market, pitching its protocol with CPSC commissioners and consumer groups March 5.

DIAPER COMPANY USES CPSIA FOR MARKETING
In a departure from recent angst by industries shocked to find out that their products and materials would fall under the CPSIA lead and phthalates limits, one specialty diaper company is using the new law’s restrictions for marketing.
