California Proposes TB-117 Update

The California Bureau of Electronic & Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings & Thermal Insulation in late July released draft Technical Bulletin 117-2012 proposing an updated standard designed to “produce upholstered furniture which is safer from the hazards associated with smoldering ignition” and includes three test methods. The bulletin comes on the heels of California Governor Jerry Brown (D) calling for reconsideration of rules mandating flame retardant (FR) chemicals, especially TB-117 (PSL, 6/25/12, p. 8).
